Structure

A dispersed deposit of brushwood in opposing drain faces (Wth 3.5m; D 0.67m). The brushwood (diam. 0.01-0.05m) lies at irregular angles. A coherent structure is not evident and the depth of the deposit may indicate that it accumulated over a considerable period of time. It is not certain that all of the wood is archaeological. Wood species include birch, hazel and oak. The site lies in moderately humified Sphagnum peat with Eriophorum. This is one of a series of comparable sites along a 34m long stretch in this drain face which includes SMR OF015-171---- c. 1m to the NW and SMR OF015-170---- c. 0.8m to the SE. Recorded by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit (University College, Dublin) in 1996. The evidence is not sufficient to warrant its acceptance as the remains of an archaeological monument.
