Burnt mound in Ballyboggan

Situated on a N-facing slope overlooking the inner harbour of Wexford. Further archaeological testing during 2008 on an extension of the original licence (06E1089) identified the remains of two burnt mounds (WX037-093002-; WX037-093003-) and an area with pits (WX037-093001-). This feature is a thin key-hole shaped spread of broken and burnt stone (dims 12m E-W; 5m N-S). All the features await resolution. Burnt mound in Ballyboggan is a Bronze Age ritual or industrial site, characterised by a heap of heat-shattered stones, typically associated with water and possibly used for ceremonial or thermally-related activities. Its location overlooking the inner harbour of Wexford suggests a possible connection to early seafaring or settlement activity in the region.
