Enclosure in Ballybeg Big

Enclosure

What is recorded here

Ballybeg Big, County Carlow: enclosure locally called rath, never cultivated, without visible surface marks. It resists description, which is why it remains memorable: a hidden boundary in open farmland, perhaps marking an old home, warning, or boundary of a lost arrangement.
The following description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Carlow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Referred to by local tradition as 'rath' and not cultivated. No visible surface indications of an antiquity.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
