Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballinlongig

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are human ringforts misnamed by folklore. In Ballinlongig, a circular earthen bank and shallow ditch mark a small dwelling place now grazed by cattle. The gaps in the bank are not mystical, but worn by hooves and time. What is clear is that people lived there, shaped the earth, and left a round shadow behind in the pasture.
In level pasture. Circular area (24.4m N-S; 24.8m E-W) enclosed by earthen bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.25m) with external fosse (D 0.35m; Wth 1.55m) E->W, and defined by scarped edge (H 1m; Wth 2m) with field boundary running along its outer edge W->NE, and enclosed by fosse alone NE->E. Numerous gaps in bank due to cattle erosion. Enclosing element and N third of interior covered by overgrowth, otherwise interior level and under pasture.
