What is recorded here

Doubt and mystery still surround the earthwork in Ballincolloo. It may be an ancient boundary, a forgotten farm ridge or only drainage ditches made by men who worked the land. The house above it has vanished, the river still marks the townland edge, and the irregular shape survives in aerial photographs. What is certain is that the place resisted easy explanation even when the tools for seeing it improved.

In reclaimed pasture, 30m W of Morningstar River that forms townland boundary with Baggotstown West, immediately S of the levelled Ballincolloo House. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Potential cropmark site identified during examination of aerial photographs (BGE 1/10,000, 61) taken 03/11/1984 on the Bórd Gáis Éireann gas pipeline. Irregular-shaped cropmarks visible on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimages. Doubtful antiquity, could be drainage ditches rather than an archaeological earthwork.
