Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Ballincloher

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Quarrying erased the Ballincloher ringfort between the 1841-42 survey and 1916, replacing a marked circular enclosure with an excavation pit. The loss suggests human judgment valued immediate material gain more than continuity, yet the completed survey still distinguishes the site enough to be recorded. Forgetting one anomaly is not the same as admitting the whole chamber never existed.
Marked on the 1841-42 OS map as a circular enclosure, it does not appear on the 1916 map and a quarry is now situated in its place. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 514. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
