Burnt mound in Ballard

In wet pasture, located in the base of a narrow NE-SW valley, adjacent to the NW side of a NE-SW field drain, with traces of an old stream bed curving around the W side of the mound. One of several fulachtaí fia and burnt mounds which occur over a distance of c. 1.5km along the flat-bottomed valley. This mound was levelled during land reclamation works in the early 1990's. Remains comprise a roughly circular spread (diam. c. 8m) of shattered sandstone within a charcoal-rich matrix. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 12 May 2011

Burnt mound in Ballard is a fulacht fia, dating to the Early to Middle Bronze Age. These features were likely used for cooking or industrial purposes and are significant as common but enigmatic elements of Bronze Age landscapes in Ireland.
