Seven metres long and five wide, the cut stretched beneath Balgatheran like a forgotten room. Rounded corners softened its edges while burnt bone and medieval pottery waited inside the dark soil. People may have sat there, breathed there, or buried what they no longer wanted to carry. The road builders removed the eastern part before they knew what the shape had held.

Discovered prior to road construction (Excavation Licence No. 00E0477). An area measuring c. 4800sq m was excavated (Chapple 2002, 210-12). A variety of different structures and phases of activity were identified. Two large boundary ditches (LH021-065001- and LH021-065002-), an industrial site (LH021-065003-), a hut site (LH021-065004-) and a kiln (LH021-065005-) date to the Early Christian period. Three structures (LH021-065006-, LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-) date to the Medieval period. This structure (LH021-065006-) was found close to the two other medieval structures (LH021-065007- and LH021-065008-). Excavation revealed a cut (Wth 0.75m; D 0.5m) of sub-rectangular shape with rounded corners (7m N-S by 5.2m E-W). Site was heavily truncated and both the eastern part of the structure and any occupational surfaces had been removed.
