Ring-ditch in Baldrumman — Report the wrong picture

Ring-ditch 2 in Baldrumman is an oval Iron Age boundary, thirteen and a half metres long, with a west-facing entrance narrow enough to force every visitor to slow down. It stood near Lusk until road works exposed it, yielding ash charcoal dated between 60 BC and AD 80. The cremated bone buried in its fills belonged to animals, not people, suggesting the ditch marked a household or ritual space rather than a grave.

One of two Iron Age ring ditches (see also DU007-076001-) excavated in advance of a service station on the M1 near Lusk (Reg. no. E4030). Ring-ditch 2 (13.5m NW – SE x 12m NE – SW) was oval in shape with a W-facing entrance (2.9m wide). Cremated bone was recovered from the fills of ring-ditch 2 but it was identified as animal rather than human. A radiocarbon date of 60 BC–AD 80 was obtained from a charcoal sample (identified as Ash) recovered from the secondary fill (Russell 2009, 23).
