What is recorded here

One can still see the carved faces and plain cross on its octagonal panels, though the shaft and base are modern replacements for parts lost or damaged in its moves. It drifted from Clady graveyard to Bective House, then into the Church of Ireland at Bective from 1953 until about 1994, and finally into the Roman Catholic church at Robinstown, where it waits inside the entrance porch. Children may have pressed their palms against its cool stone, and priests may have poured water into its shallow basin during baptisms, giving life to a place that kept changing rather than disappearing.
A font, described by Wilde (1850, 95-6) as being plain and octagonal and 'two feet five inches in diameter (c. 0.7m)', and located in the graveyard at Bective parish church, known as Clady (ME031-019----), spent some time at Bective House. However, from 1953 until c. 1994 it was in the Church of Ireland church of Bective (ME031-010----). When this church closed the font was moved to the Roman Catholic church at Robinstown where it is kept inside the entrance porch. It is octagonal (ext. dim. 0.56m; H 0.3m) with a circular basin (diam. 0.48m; D 0.2m) and has a slight chamfer underneath. The basin rests on an octagonal piece that narrows to the shaft (dim. 0.3m; H 0.37m) which is modern. The shaft rests on an octagonal base (H 0.12m) which is also modern (total H 0.97m). two panels are decorated with faces in relief, a third has a shield with a plain cross and there is a small panel of vine-leaves (Roe 1968, 25-7).
