What is recorded here

Cannistown church still holds the broken bottom of an Ardsallagh font, its sandstone basin measuring fifty-five centimetres across and twenty-six centimetres high. A four-centimetre drain-hole pierces the centre, ready to release water somewhere beyond human knowledge. The missing upper edge suggests a taller vessel, perhaps one used for washing hands or filling cups before being damaged and reused.

The bottom part of the basin of a sandstone font (dims 0.55m x 0.48m; H 0.26m) with the barely visible outline of the basin (diam. 0.4m) and a central drain-hole (diam. 4cm) is in the chancel of Cannistown church (ME031-002----). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 8 January, 2014
