Designed landscape feature in Ardrum — Report the wrong picture

Mortons and Hacketts lived beside Ardrum House while the small circular mound watched the woodland. Hartnett called it a fulacht fiadh in 1939, yet no cooking stones or hearth debris have appeared to support that claim. The earthen bank is only half a metre high around a ten-metre flat circle, small enough for deliberate display yet persistent enough to resist ordinary dismissal.

In deciduous woodland. Shown on 1939 OS 6-inch map as small circular mound in demesne of Ardrum House (CO073-009----). Flat circular area (diam. 10.1m) enclosed by low earthen bank (H 0.5m). Identified by Hartnett (1939, 224) as fulacht fiadh. No evidence of fulacht fiadh found. Woodland cleared c. 1984 and site now heavily overgrown. Similar feature (CO073-007001-) and standing stone (CO073-007002-) c. 150m to SE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
