Anomalous stone group in Glenreagh (duhallow By.)

Anomalous stone group

What is recorded here

Eight stones stood in a circle inside an O'Sullivan field, but a grandfather pulled them apart and scattered them. The exact spot has vanished, leaving behind only a five-stone circle and a warning that memory itself can be demolished. What those eight stones marked is gone, perhaps deliberately, perhaps accidentally, but the field still holds the shape of the loss.
Bowman (1934, 459) was informed that '8 stones were in a circle' in one of Mr O'Sullivan's fields and that these were removed by his grandfather. Exact location not known. Five-stone circle (CO021-060---) in same townland. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
