Glamis Castle has housed the Lyon family since 1372, when Robert II granted it to Sir John Lyon, and it remains the home of the Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother grew up there, and her daughter Princess Margaret was born in its walls in 1930. Shakespeare placed Macbeth at Glamis, though the historical king never lived there, giving the stone towers a stage for murder and ambition that still lingers in their shadows.
