Glamis Castle has housed the Lyon family since 1372, when Robert II granted it to Sir John Lyon, and it remains the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. The stone walls sheltered Malcolm II before his murder in 1034, and they still stand beside the Glamis Burn where rare trees watch the water flow. Princess Margaret was born there in 1930, adding royal life to a house already marked by shadow and continuity.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Glamis Castle as Castle (medieval), Country House (period Unassigned), Hospital (first World War), Tower House (medieval). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Glamis Castle was originally built by the Keith family in the 14th century and later held by the Erskine family, who became Earls of Kintore and later Earls of Glamis. It is historically important as the childhood home of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and is associated with Shakespeare's *Macbeth*, which references Glamis Castle.
