What is recorded here
Gallán stood in County Cork until removal around 1980, leaving no visible trace behind. The stone appeared on the 1938 map but vanished from earlier charts, suggesting human hands shaped its visibility as much as time did. Its disappearance feels less like loss and more like a door closing, hiding the chamber where people once gathered beneath its shadow.
Not shown on 1842 and 1903 OS 6-inch maps. Marked as single standing stone on 1938 OS 6-inch map. Removed c. 1980. No visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
