Explorer Tom Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art puts contemporary work right on Centre Square, where the whole town can join the argument about what art is for. I like a gallery willing to invite that argument, especially when a painting or a piece of jewellery makes me change my mind halfway through. The letters on the sign say MIMA; the ideas inside are larger. Part of Teesside University, MIMA cares for the Middlesbrough Collection and uses exhibitions to connect art with the town's social life. Ceramics, jewellery, painting and other work appear in changing displays, while an open collection store lets visitors see objects that might otherwise stay hidden. The gallery has also prepared to host the 2026 Turner Prize, giving the place another lively conversation with artists and audiences. The current operator lists public opening through the week apart from Monday, with the building at Centre Square. Admission is free according to the regional visitor service, though a particular event may need separate booking, so check MIMA's own programme before travelling. Move between the galleries and the open store rather than rushing straight to the headline show. This is a place that treats ordinary visitors as part of its thinking. My fictional gallery rule says anyone who declares 'I could make that' must try it with the materials provided and a very patient artist watching. There is no such punishment. The real invitation is better: ask what an object does to your view of Middlesbrough, then carry that question back outside into the square.
