Reakaglaun Fort

In pasture, on a SE-facing slope with views to The Paps of Dana. A circular area (diam. 18m) defined by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.4m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1m) topped intermittently with stone and largely obscured by bushes and trees. Rubble is piled against the internal and external faces of the bank at SW. A break (Wth 3.1m) in the bank at NE may indicate the entrance. There is a possible Man-made underground passage (KE067-024001-) in the centre of the interior. Reakaglaun Fort, Carrigeencullia is a circular early-medieval ringfort, likely dating to between the 6th and 10th centuries AD, characterized by an earth and stone bank. Local folklore, common to many such sites in Ireland, associates it with the fairies, and it may have been considered a place of supernatural significance in traditional belief.
