Rathlacken Court Cairn

Ruins

What is recorded here

Bog swallowed the court cairns and preserved their edges until a giant capstone tipped upright about twenty years ago, breaking the black surface like a bone through skin. The burial chamber emerged not through human digging but through gravity and rot, returning Neolithic shape to Mayo after centuries of forgetting.
These three neolithic court cairns and a collapsed wedge are in such good condition because they were completely buried in the bog. About 20 years ago the huge capstone slipped and tipped upright and so the site was rediscovered.
