Rathcobane Castle belonged to the Barry family and stood on a rock outcrop above marshy ground in County Cork. Considerable portions remained until 1974, when crews knocked the structure down because it had become too dangerous to leave standing. Today only a featureless fragment of wall rises from a rubble pile, marking the exact spot where a inhabited home once defied the wet earth.
