RATH in Taughlumny, County Down, is an archaeological site recorded for the early Christian period. A rath is a fortified enclosure, often circular or oval, built with earth or stone to protect people, animals and possessions. It may have served as a farmstead, a seasonal stronghold or a small community centre. The ground still holds the shape of that choice, even when the buildings and lives have disappeared from memory.
