RATH in Shannaghan, County Down, is an archaeological site recorded for the early Christian period. A rath is a fortified enclosure, often circular or oval, built with earth or stone to protect people, livestock and treasure. It may have been a farmstead, a lord's residence or a seasonal shelter. The ground still holds the shape of that choice, waiting for boots, rain and patience to reveal how tightly life was kept inside its ring.
