RATH in Curryann

Curryann in County Fermanagh still carries the name of an early Christian rath, though no wall or ditch remains visible to mark the boundary. The place belongs to the ancient Christian period and resists modern certainty about who lived there or what they guarded. A rath is a small defended space, often circular, built to separate the sacred or important from the ordinary field. That separation may have been religious, political or simply practical, but the land remembered the shape before the name faded from common use.
