RATH in Ballyshanaghill is a rath, an earthwork or fortified place recorded for County Antrim. The name and kind leave little room for doubt: this was a made place, shaped by people and remembered as a point on the land. Whether it served a farm, a family, a boundary or a small centre of power cannot be known from the name alone. What remains clear is that someone built or marked the hill, field or ridge there, and the place kept its identity long after the hands that made it disappeared.
