Rainthorpe Hall's gardens carry several periods of design beside a house begun in the early sixteenth century. Ornamental ground close to the hall is distinct from a larger nineteenth-century park and woodland.

History

An earlier house burned in 1500, and work on the present hall began in 1503. Major enlargement followed between 1579 and 1611. A small park was associated with the property by 1797. Sir Charles Hervey bought the estate after 1878 and made substantial changes to the hall, as well as building stables and a gardener's cottage. In 1993 the hall and gardens were sold separately from the surrounding park. This division matters when reading the estate's recorded boundaries.

In the grounds

The wider park and woodland covered about 24 hectares, while the ornamental gardens beside the hall occupied about two. An Elizabethan knot garden is among the ornamental features from different periods. The hall, stable block and gardener's cottage stood within managed ground beside the wider park. The distinct sale of hall gardens and park means their historic relationship should be kept in view without assuming common ownership today.
