Rainsborrow Crag is a sea cliff composed of Carboniferous limestone, formed around 340–320 million years ago through the accumulation of marine sediments. It is notable for its exposure of durable limestone strata that have resisted coastal erosion, providing a local example of the geological history of the English Lake District region.
