What is recorded here
RAF Holmpton is a deep underground command bunker built during the early Cold War and later adapted as radar and national emergency systems changed. Protected rooms, communications equipment and filtered services show how Britain planned to track attack and continue military control during a nuclear war that might destroy the world above.
What this place is
The museum occupies an exact underground operations bunker constructed for radar command beneath an ordinary-looking surface compound near the coast.
People and events
Radar operators, plotters, communications staff, engineers and commanders worked or trained here under secrecy, often on long shifts in sealed rooms.
How it was used
Information from radar sites entered protected operations rooms; later rebuilding supported new warning and command duties as Cold War threats changed.
What survives
Concrete tunnels, blast doors, operations areas, communications fittings, ventilation plant and surface buildings survive with reconstructed equipment.
Why it mattered
Holmpton mattered because nuclear defence relied on hidden human and technical systems, and the bunker reveals both their sophistication and their grim assumptions.
