R. C. Chapel (in Ruins)

Church

What is recorded here

At the N end of Inchigeelagh. The 1842 OS 6-inch map shows a T-shaped 'R.C. Chapel' on the E side of the village street c. 100m to S of present church (CO081-014003-), on site of, or incorporated into, present parish hall; this is probably the church which Lewis (1837, vol. 2, 15) described as 'built in 1820, and considerably enlarged in 1830'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
