Quay in Moneymore

Discovered during pre-development excavation in 1997 (Excavation Licence No. 96E0160). Part of the Quay wall, which was up to three metres in H and ran from St. Mary's Gate to St. Catherine's Gate, was uncovered. Also exposed, 1.5m to the N of the Quay wall, was a portion of a wooden base plate (5.6m x 0.28m). It was broken at its eastern end and incorporated rectangular mortices for uprights. This probably represents part of a 12th century revetment that served as the Quay wall prior to the construction of the stone wall. (pers. comm.
