Promontory fort stands in County Mayo, Ireland. Its inland location suggests the builders valued the shape of the land as much as the reach of the sea. A ridge may have narrowed the approach, forcing visitors into a line where the fort could watch them. The stones may have marked a boundary between neighbourhoods, seasons or claims. People may have gathered there to argue, trade or remember a warning. The fort still holds that much of its life because it keeps its shape.
