What is recorded here
Half a mile south of another coastal fort, two heavy stone walls bend around a narrow Kerry ridge. The outer bank stretches sixty-four metres and rises three metres above its ditch, while the inner wall stands slightly lower behind a three-metre gap. That much stone on so little land suggests people valued height, sight and defensible space more than room. Perhaps they watched the sea, kept livestock from predators, or simply believed a small place could become strong when edge and height worked together.
Marked on the OS maps as 'Cahercarbery (Beg)', it situated about half a mile S of promontory fort KE013-001----. The double rampart is convex to the land and runs over a high ridge, thus making the interior appear small. The outer stone wall measures 64m long, 8m in width at the base of the bank, 1.2m above the inner fosse and 3m above the outer fosse. The inner wall, 3m from the first, rises 1.2m above the interior and 2.8m above the fosse and the width of the bank at the base measures 8m. There also appears to be a low mound measuring 6m in width at the base and c1.2m in height at the SE sector on the exterior side of the outer bank, beyond which is possibly another fosse. No internal features to be noted. See also: Ballybunnion Castle (KE004-031002-); Doon Castle (KE004-006001-); Pookeenee Castle (KE004-019001-); Brown's Castle (KE009-024002-).
