What is recorded here

The lios is a sub-circular platform above clay cliffs in County Cork, Ireland. A curved fosse once cut through its northern and western edges, opening a laneway toward a rockey shore. People have lived beside this fort for generations, shaping its ditches and placing a wooden summer house at its centre.
Sub-circular platform (21m E-W; 20.5m N-S) on W side of stream gully, above clay cliffs. Westropp (1921, 109-110) describes 'curved fosse' to N and W through which laneway runs to rockey shore. Fosse eroded away on W side; enlarged on N side cutting into interior, landward side stone-faced. Interior level; summer house (wooden) at centre. According to local information fosse to N enlarged when house built c. 20-30 years ago; locally known as 'the lios'. Westropp (ibid) met an old man who heard it called 'the Doon' in his boyhood. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
