Mud, stone and sea make a small knife of land at Newfoundland Bay. A bank and ditch cut the back, leaving a narrow causeway where people must enter alone or be seen entering together. The fort still points into the water like a finger pressing a question into the chest.

Sub-rectangular area (100m NW-SE; 74m NE-SW) projecting SE into Newfoundland Bay; defined on landward side by earthen bank (L 86m; max. int. H 1.1m; max. ext. H 1.95m) with external fosse (D 0.6m), extending from SW edge for 52m. Bank topped by earthen field boundary (H c. 0.8m),stone faced in parts. Entrance (Wth 4m) with causeway lies 30m from SW edge. Interior slopes up from bank to level area. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork.
