Prison in Dublin South City

Prison

What is recorded here

Merchant's Quay and Bridge Street both claim the lost prison. One is a crowded memory, the other an absent address. The city keeps both because it would rather preserve the shape of the injury than reduce it to a point on a line.
De Courcy (1996, 46) mentions the location of the combined City and Four Courts Marshalsea or prison on Bridge Street which was moved to the S end of Merchant's Quay in 1704. The precise location of this building has not been identified. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 5 July 2023
