Explorer TomPotternewton Park in Leeds has enough room for a proper wander and enough games to expose anyone who claims they are 'just watching'. Follow its paths past open lawns, flowers, tennis courts and a giant chess board; by the time somebody appoints themselves king, the park has already won.
This is a public park in Chapeltown, spread across more than 32 acres by Harehills Lane. Leeds City Council lists a bowling green, basketball, a skate area and a playground alongside the paths and planted spaces. Potternewton has also hosted major community celebrations, including West Indian Carnival events over the August bank holiday. That lively use sits naturally beside an ordinary afternoon stroll: one minute you are crossing grass beneath trees, the next someone is trying to explain chess strategy with the confidence of a man who has misplaced his queen.
The council gives Harehills Lane, LS7 4HA, as the address. Paths allow wheelchair travel, though gradients vary and the Avenue Hill entrance has a step, so choose your entrance with care. There are no public toilets listed in the park. Come for a walk, a game or an event, but check the event organiser's current details before planning around a concert or carnival. Give other visitors and players room, especially on busy days.
I suspect the giant chess pieces hold secret meetings after dark to complain about being left in check by children. They have never invited me, which feels pointed. Potternewton is best discovered in daylight, with time to follow a path and see what game is on.
