Post office in Gowran

Towards the E end of Gowran, on the S side of Main Street. A building annotated, ‘Post Office’ is indicated at this location on White’s map of Gowran, 1710/11. Though the map is early 18th century in date, it is likely that the post office dates to the 17th century, as a post office was established in the town between 1659 and 1682 (Hughes 2015, 67, map 1.2). During this period George Warbuton, a senior postmaster official in Dublin from c. 1667-1703, was also elected as MP to the Irish parliament from Gowran in 1692-3 (ibid., 57, 64-8).
