Freestanding cast-iron pillar postbox, erected c. 1940. Shallow domed cap with fluted rim, moulded neck and plinth. Raised 'Post Office' insignia to door to front. Maker's insignia to rear of plinth 'Carron Company Stirlingshire'.

This attractive piece of street furniture is representative of the standard of mass-production of cast-iron ware in the early twentieth century. Its modest design is subtly enlivened by moulded and dentillated detailing. Like many of the postboxes in the vicinity it was cast by Carron Ltd, in Stirlingshire, Scotland and the insignia of that company adds contextual interest. This probably replaced an earlier Victorian or Edwardian postbox, as L.B. is indicated on the corner of Seafield Road on the third edition Ordnance Survey map. It is a subtle and well-made historical artifact, adding incident to the suburban landscape.
