The Post box on Shanliss Road has a ring of little iron teeth tucked under its domed cap. It’s dressed like a respectable public servant, but the hat looks capable of bringing down a gazelle.
Freestanding round-plan cast-iron pillar postbox, installed c. 1930, with plinth base, raised insignia 'P&T' to front (south) face, moulded neck, dentillated frieze and domed cap, and maker's mark to base at rear. Located on east side of Shanliss Road.
This attractive piece of street furniture represents the high quality of mass-produced cast-ironwork of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The insignia, representing the national postal service, dates the box to the early years of the Irish Republic.
