Portman Road Stadium in Ipswich, England, has served as the home ground for Ipswich Town since 1884. It has undergone numerous renovations and expansions to accommodate growing crowds and meet safety standards.

Why it was built

Portman Road Stadium was initially chosen by Ipswich Town in 1884 as a permanent home ground, replacing Broomhill Park. The stadium's location allowed for easy access and expansion over time.

People and work

The Supporters' Association played a crucial role in funding improvements at Portman Road, including the construction of concrete terracing in 1952 and the West Stand in 1957. The stadium has hosted numerous matches and events, attracting thousands of spectators.

How it changed

Standing terraces were converted to seats in the early 1990s after a national review of football-ground safety. Rebuilding in the early 2000s raised capacity from 22,600 to more than 30,000. Later work added dugouts, heating beneath a new pitch, press and camera spaces, and more room for visiting supporters.

What survives

Today, Portman Road features four all-seater stands: the Sir Bobby Robson Stand, Cobbold Stand, Sir Alf Ramsey Stand, and West Stand. The stadium retains a strong connection to local history with statues of former managers Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson.

Why it mattered

Portman Road has tied the club to the centre of Ipswich since 1884. Supporters did more than watch: their association paid for concrete standing areas, a new west stand and floodlights during the 1950s. Army use during the First World War, a record crowd of 38,010 in 1975 and statues of Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson give the ground a wider civic memory.
