Portaferry Castle is a 15th- or 16th-century tower-house built by the Savage family on the slope overlooking Portaferry harbour. Its square plan includes one projecting southern tower, a small machicolation arch above the door, three storeys, an attic, spiral stairs and wooden floors rather than a stone vault. The east angle is ruined, leaving a hollow shell that still faces Strangford and Audley’s Castles across the water.
