Cranes' Corner

Cranes' Corner is a headland composed primarily of basalt, formed during the Palaeogene period (approximately 60 to 55 million years ago) as part of the extensive volcanic activity associated with the opening of the North Atlantic. It is notable for its columnar jointing, a result of the rapid cooling of lava flows, and for its contribution to the dramatic coastal scenery of County Down.
