
Overview
Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carried the Llangollen Canal across the Dee valley using an iron trough on tall stone piers. Completed in 1805 through the work of Thomas Telford and William Jessop, it showed that canals could cross ground that had once seemed too difficult and became a landmark of the Industrial Revolution.
What this place is
The aqueduct is the most striking work in the Pontcysyllte Canal World Heritage Site. A narrow iron water channel is carried high above the valley on metal arches and slender masonry piers.
People and events
Engineers Thomas Telford and William Jessop directed the work for the Ellesmere Canal. The aqueduct was completed in 1805, when improved inland transport was helping mines, quarries, ironworks and markets exchange heavy goods on a much larger scale.
How it was used
It let canal boats cross the Dee valley without locks dropping to the river and climbing back up. The use of iron reduced weight while the tall piers and arches carried the trough across difficult ground.
What survives
The aqueduct remains a working navigable waterway. Its main structure and relationship with the surrounding canal landscape survive with limited changes to materials.
Why it mattered
Pontcysyllte was a bold answer to a transport barrier. Its form helped prove the strength and reach of iron engineering, increased what inland waterways could do, and influenced later civil engineering far beyond Wales.
