Polly Bay features a sea cliff composed primarily of basalt, formed during volcanic activity in the Paleogene period, around 60 to 55 million years ago. The cliffs are notable for their columnar jointing, a result of the rapid cooling of lava flows, and are part of the broader geological formation associated with the North Atlantic Igneous Province.
