Pit in Randalstown

Situated on a rise in a fairly level landscape. Archaeological monitoring (98E0352) by Donald Murphy of topsoil removal over an area of about 8 hectares (c. 20 acres) in the N borrowing area of a mining development identified four spreads of burnt mound material and other features that were completely excavated by the same archaeologist under the same license (excavations.ie 1999:708). The features in Area 5 were resolved as two pits (diam. 0.5-0.53m; D 0.12m: 0.3-0.32m; D 0.12m) set 6.55m apart and c. 25m NW of the fulacht fia (ME018-035----). They were both filled with silty clays that had charcoal flecks or some burnt stone, and three flints, one with secondary working, were recovered from the larger pit.
