Pit-burial in Unknown Townland

Test excavations on a development N of the Royal Hospital in 2002 uncovered a pit burial (Walsh 2004, 169). The Food Vesssel sat in an unprotected pit (L0.59m, Wth 0.5m). There was no evidence of a cist or mound (Walsh 2004, 169).

A pit burial, likely dating to the Early Christian or medieval period, based on the presence of a Food Vessel. Its significance lies in providing evidence of simple funerary practices in a presumably rural or peripheral context.
