Pit-burial in Ballyman

During road widening operations in 1979 two pit burials were truncated. They were located S of Carrickgollogan hill close to the County Wicklow border. Grave 1 was a burial contained in an inverted cordoned urn and contained the remains of a young adult. Grave 2 was a cordoned urn that contained the remains of two individuals, an adult and a juvenile. Cremated bone from the cordoned urn revealed a calibrated date of 1736-1531 BC at 95% probality. Pit-burial in Ballyman is a Bronze Age inhumation burial, dating to approximately 2000–800 BCE. Its significance lies in providing evidence of early funerary practices and pottery styles associated with the developing agricultural and ritual traditions of the period in eastern Ireland.
