Pit-burial in Ballycasey More

Pit-burial

What is recorded here

No human body has been named, no date has been fixed, and no vessel has been described. The pit itself is the whole record. A hole dug through clay and marble, a skeleton placed inside, and soil returned above. Everything else is invention. The dead person may have been young or old, loved or forgotten, buried in haste or ceremony. The pit does not answer. It only exists.
The Archaeological Survey of Ireland (ASI) is in the process of providing information on all monuments on The Historic Environment Viewer (HEV). Currently the information for this record has not been uploaded. To access available information for research purposes please make an appointment in advance with the Archive Unit (open Fridays 10.00 am – 5.00 pm), Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, The Custom House, Dublin 1 D01W6XO or email NMarchive@housing.gov.ie.
A pit-burial; likely Bronze Age. Its significance lies in contributing to the understanding of early burial practices in the region.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
