Piper Alpha was an oil drilling platform located off the coast of Scotland that was destroyed by a catastrophic explosion and fire on July 6, 1988. The disaster resulted in the deaths of 167 workers, making it the worst offshore oil disaster in the UK in terms of loss of life; its significance lies in leading to major changes in offshore safety regulations.
