Phoenix Park

Detached T-plan three-bay single-storey neoclassical gate lodge, built c.1830, having deep projecting central bay, and fully abutted to rear by mid-twentieth-century extension. Now in use as house. Hipped roof concealed behind parapet, with leaded ridges and hips (presumably natural slate). Two original ashlar granite chimneystacks with corniced coping, located to party walls between bays. Parapet gutters. Walling is ashlar limestone with granite dressings including V-jointed quoins, plinth, frieze and cornice. Distyle-in antis Doric portico with granite platform. Windows are replacement six-over-six pane horned timber sliding sashes, with dressed granite surrounds, slightly recessed into wall face. Replacement multi-panelled timber door, with recessed plain granite reveals, accessed from granite platform; additional full-width granite step partially submerged in tarmac road surface. Located within southern park boundary, adjacent to substantial gate screen (50060311). Fronts directly onto tarmac park entrance road and has small enclosed plot bounded by cast-iron railings, with double vehicular gates to north and pedestrian gate to south. Mature tree-lined boundary to east and north.

A fine early nineteenth-century neoclassical gate lodge, erected to designs by Decimus Burton, and forming an important part of his nineteenth-century remodelling of Phoenix Park. The lodge is well-maintained, characterised by harmonious proportions and fine detailing in ashlar granite and limestone. It has been well maintained to retain an original aspect and forms a fine example of late neoclassical architecture. The gate lodge is complemented by a cast-iron and granite gate screen and together they form an important element of the park boundary, designed for public view.
