Phoenix Park

Granite and iron gate screen, built 1836. Double geometric spear-headed cast-iron vehicular gates flanked by matching pedestrian gates (that to east side pivoting), supported on four square-section ashlar granite piers having corniced caps with blocking stone and plain plinth. Inner piers topped by brass lamps over cast-iron standards (maker's mark: Kilbride). Cast-iron railings over granite plinth to either side supported at rear by curlicue bracing supports; ensemble terminated at either end by granite piers attached to alcoved rubble stone south boundary wall of Phoenix park. Tarmac entrance road and footpath to front. Forms set-piece with neoclassical gate lodge within. Set at Chapelizod entrance to Phoenix Park.

A fine early nineteenth-century cast-iron and granite gate screen, erected to designs by Decimus Burton, and forming an important part of his nineteenth-century remodelling of Phoenix Park. The gate screen is designed to complement the adjacent neoclassical gate lodge (50060312), located just within the gates, forming an important element of the park boundary and designed for public view. Well maintained, the gate screen is enhanced by the restored Kilbride copper gas lamp standards.
